What is Botox?
Classified as a neuromodulator, Botox is an injectable medication that inhibits excess nerve signals. It is most often used to relax overactive muscles, by reducing the nerve signals that cause excess contractions. Botox has been used medically for more than 40 years, and cosmetically for more than 20 years, and it has an excellent record of safety and efficacy.

Botox for head and neck pain management
Botox earned FDA approval for treatment of chronic migraines in 2010, and extensive research has confirmed its effectiveness. Unlike most migraines, Botox is not used after the pain begins. Instead, it is a preventive treatment. According to one study, after just five Botox treatments, 70 percent of participants reported about half as many migraines. Botox has also been shown to reduce chronic neck pain that is associated with muscles or nerves.
About the procedure
The dosage and location of Botox injections depends on your treatment goals. It acts locally, meaning it impacts nerves precisely where it is injected. For example, cosmetic treatment of crow’s feet involves injections around the corners of your eyes. To treat migraines, Botox is injected at precise locations along the path of nerves that cause the pain.
Because we use precise techniques and a very fine needle, the injections are quite comfortable. The medication works gradually, so it can take a few days to a couple of weeks for results to develop. It is a temporary medication, so you will need regular maintenance treatments to continue enjoying the results of Botox. The frequency of treatments varies, because every body responds to Botox a little differently, though the average is about every three months.
