Patients located in Tucson, Arizona who need an extra layer of protection for specific teeth within their smiles may be told by Dr. Krizman that the placement of a dental crown is the best solution available. Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman of Tucson Biological Dentistry encourages patients to consider dental crowns when a tooth has been weakened.
Dental crowns explained
Dr. Krizman sometimes refers to dental crowns as “caps.” These restorations are used to cover a tooth that has become badly damaged. This may be caused by an extremely large cavity, or injury to the natural tooth. Chipped, cracked teeth can benefit from the placement of a “cap” which offers another layer of protection to maintain the natural tooth structure. The crowns may be made of materials such as porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to metal.
How crowns are placed
Crowns are custom made from impressions of a prepared tooth, taken after Dr. Krizman has removed a layer of enamel. The crown is then bonded over the natural tooth. The purpose of the crown is to cover the entire tooth above the gum line. Crowns may be chosen over inlays and onlays when areas of damage are extremely large or the entire exposed tooth needs protection. Determining the restoration necessary is done during an evaluation appointment with our team which may include an examination and x-rays to check the health of the teeth.
