Safe amalgam filling removal by biological dentist in Tucson, AZ
Posted By Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman
Metal amalgam has been used in dentistry for many decades to restore teeth that have cavities or other issues that require a dental restoration. While amalgam is highly effective at filling in areas that have been compromised and returning normal function to a tooth, many people are concerned about the mercury content of amalgam. When you chew or grind your teeth, small amounts of mercury in the filling can seep out of the restoration and then enter the body, where it can cause toxic effects in some people. At Tucson Biological Dentistry, we offer safe amalgam filling removal for patients who prefer to have a more biocompatible material such as composite resin or porcelain used for their dental restorations.
Our protocol for removal of amalgam fillings
Dr. Jeanne Krizman, DMD, MPH, IMD has completed the Hal Huggins Protocol Training Program and is also accredited by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT) in the safe removal of amalgam. At Tucson Biological Dentistry, we use the detailed, stringent SMART amalgam protocol to protect both you and our staff from mercury exposure during the removal process. This involves several important steps before, during, and after the amalgam removal occurs.
Before your treatment
Prior to your appointment, we will ask you to start taking Vitamin C, ZINC, AND SELENIUM to help detoxify your cells and tissues
When you come in, we will have you rinse with oral activated charcoal, which binds to any mercury present and prevents it from being absorbed in your digestive tract or oral tissues
We offer mercury and heavy metal blood testing both before and after your amalgam removal procedure
We will cover you with a waterproof sheet to protect your skin and clothes, as well as use a soft dental dam to isolate the tooth in your mouth and a dental dam napkin to protect your face and eyes
During the procedure
We use ozonated water while we are removing the filling to reduce the number of mercury particles in the area
We are equipped with the Dental HG FlexVac™ from IQAir and use it to quickly suction any ultra-fine particles away from your mouth so you don’t inhale or absorb them; this device also serves the double purpose of filtering out microbes such as harmful bacteria and viruses from the area
Our Tact-Air 10-8 mercury vapor ionizer releases billions of negative ions per second to capture any mercury vapor that is in the air
We use medical-grade oxygen for a supplemental air source throughout the treatment
Our high-volume evacuation system encloses the treatment area and suctions away any small particles from the filling as it is being removed
After your treatment, we offer mercury testing and mercury detoxification support, and are always here to answer any questions you may have.
